GENERAL INFORMATION:
Vanilla is an orchid, most known around the world for the cured beans which produce the prized vanilla extract we all know and love! Historically, vanilla grew wild around the gulf of Mexico along with various locations throughout the Caribbean. Farm cultivation of vanilla began around 1185 and was widely introduced into Europe in the 1520’s alongside chocolate. It was here that the use of Vanilla boomed and continued to expand into arguably one of the most well-known food ingredients in the world. Vanilla Extract is one of the few food ingredients in the United States that has a legal standard of identity. This guarantees a minimum content of vanilla bean and ethanol are used to produce the extract.
